Schauffele wins Tour Championship, Thomas takes FedEx Cup

Sep 24, 2017

ATLANTA — Xander Schauffele ended his rookie season by winning the Tour Championship. Justin Thomas ended the best season with the FedEx Cup. Schauffele, a 23-year-old from San Diego who was worried about keeping his PGA Tour card just over three months ago, swirled in a 3-foot birdie putt on the final hole Sunday for a 2-under 68 and a one-shot victory over Thomas. He became the first PGA Tour rookie to win the Tour Championship since it began in 1987. Thomas never had more reason to celebrate finishing second. He capped off a season of five victories, including his...

FIFA set to relax ban on war dead commemorations at games

Sep 24, 2017

FIFA is set to relax the rules that ban teams from commemorating non-sporting events at soccer matches in response to high-profile disputes with British associations over honoring war dead. England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales were fined by FIFA last year for displaying poppies at World Cup qualifying matches. World soccer's governing body ruled that poppies flouted regulations banning political, religious or personal symbols on kit and in stadiums, leading to the British nations to push for a change. Months of talks led to FIFA distributing a circular to member associations on Friday presenting draft proposals that tighten the definition...

MEXICO CITY — The latest on Mexico's earthquake (all times local): 5 p.m. Neighbors and residents of a collapsed apartment building on the south side of Mexico City have obtained an injunction from a judge that says rescue efforts must continue for five more days. A spokesman for the building's residents and neighbors said Sunday that the injunction was obtained Saturday night, so four days remain. Spokesman Isaac Garcia says the injunction was a precautionary measure to make sure the search continues at the site wrecked by Tuesday's earthquake. He says residents and neighbors have maintained a good relationship with...

Hardy's crowd-pleasing HR lifts Orioles past Rays 9-4

Sep 24, 2017

BALTIMORE — If this was indeed J.J. Hardy's final game at Camden Yards with the Orioles, he couldn't have asked for a better scenario. Hardy enjoyed an unforgettable afternoon during an otherwise dreary season, hitting a crowd-pleasing home run and scoring twice to help Baltimore beat the Tampa Bay Rays 9-4 on Sunday. Rookie Chance Sisco also homered for the Orioles, who earned a split of the four-game series to finish their home schedule with a 46-35 record. On Saturday night, Baltimore was mathematically eliminated from the playoff hunt and assured its first losing season since 2011. So the focus...

Tigers' Cabrera diagnosed with herniated disks in back

Sep 24, 2017

DETROIT — Detroit Tigers slugger Miguel Cabrera has been diagnosed Sunday with two herniated disks in his back. Cabrera left Saturday's 10-4 loss to Minnesota due to tightness in his lower back. The Tigers said Sunday an MRI showed damage between the L3 and L4, and the L4 and L5 disk. Detroit manager Brad Ausmus said it is unlikely the 34-year-old will have surgery and said Cabrera probably will be treated with anti-inflammatory injections to quell pain. "It's probably been slowly developing for years," Ausmus said. A four-time AL batting champion, Cabrera is hitting .249 with 16 homers and 60...
