Black students rally at Cornell amid student beating probe

ITHACA, N.Y. — A black students organization at Cornell University is demanding coursework on "privilege and power" and conversion of a frat house into a cultural center following an alleged attack of a black student by a white student.

Black Students United held a protest Wednesday and delivered demands to President Martha Pollack. The Cornell Daily Sun reports one demand is to permanently ban Psi Upsilon from campus.

The fraternity's alumni board told the Ivy League school Tuesday the chapter would be closed immediately. Cornell banned it last year for conduct code violations.

The New York Times reports students who may have been involved in the fraternity were accused of attacking the student Friday. Ithaca police say the student was called a racial epithet.

A 19-year-old Cornell student has been charged with assault.
