Fuel Your Day with Simple Grab and Go Breakfast Ideas from Intermountain Health Dietitians

Sep 29, 2026

Breakfast doesn't have to be complicated. Intermountain Health registered dietitian nutritionist say a healthy breakfast can be simple, quick, and portable.

SALT LAKE CITY, UT (PRUnderground) September 29th, 2026

Is "Breakfast is the most important meal of the day," or was that made up by cereal companies? Intermountain Health registered dietitians say breakfast really does matter.

In today's busy world, many people find themselves rushing out the door with nothing more than a cup of coffee, or skipping breakfast altogether. Approximately one in four Americans regularly skips breakfast, making it the most frequently skipped meal of the day.

The answer isn't one-size-fits-all, but for many people, starting the day with balanced nutrition can provide important benefits for energy, focus, and overall health.

  1. •             A 2019 systematic review and meta-analysis found that people who skipped breakfast 4 to 5 days per week had up to a 55% higher risk of Type 2 diabetes compared with those who ate breakfast regularly.
    •             Research has also consistently found that skipping breakfast regularly is associated with being overweight and obesity.

Give your body the fuel it needs

"After a night of sleep, your body has gone several hours without food. Breakfast helps replenish energy stores and provides the nutrients your body and brain need to function at their best," said Carly Alba, RDN, a registered dietitian nutritionist at Intermountain Health.

"Think of breakfast as the first opportunity to fuel your day. Whether you're heading to work, school, the gym, or simply tackling a busy schedule, eating something nourishing in the morning can help support steady energy levels and concentration," she added.

According to Alba, many people notice they feel more focused and productive when they start their day with a balanced meal that includes protein, fiber, and healthy fats.

Breakfast doesn't have to be complicated

One of the biggest misconceptions about breakfast is that it has to be a large, sit-down meal. However, a healthy breakfast can be simple, quick, and portable.

If you aren't hungry immediately after waking up, that's okay. Listen to your body's hunger cues. Some people may prefer eating within an hour of waking, while others feel better waiting a bit longer. What's most important is finding a routine that works for you and includes nourishing foods throughout the day.

What makes a healthy breakfast?

A satisfying breakfast typically includes:

•             Protein to help keep you full and support muscle health
•             Fiber-rich carbohydrates for lasting energy
•             Healthy fats to increase satisfaction and nutrient absorption

These combinations provide a mix of nutrients that can help keep hunger at bay until the next meal.

Quick grab-and-go breakfast ideas

Busy mornings don't have to mean skipping breakfast. A little planning can go a long way. Here are some great grab-and-go breakfast ideas:

•             Overnight oats: Prepare oats the night before with milk, yogurt, fruit, and nuts. In the morning, grab a spoon and go.
•             Greek yogurt parfait: Layer Greek yogurt with berries and a sprinkle of granola for a protein-packed breakfast that takes less than a minute to assemble.
•             Breakfast burritos: Make several at once using eggs, vegetables, beans, and cheese in a whole grain tortilla. Freeze individually and reheat when needed.
•             Protein smoothies: Blend milk, Greek yogurt, fruit, nut butter, and spinach for an easy breakfast you can drink on the commute.
•             Peanut butter toast: Whole grain toast topped with peanut butter and sliced banana provides fiber, protein, and healthy fats in minutes.
•             Cottage cheese cups: Pair cottage cheese with fresh fruit, tomatoes, or whole grain crackers for a quick and satisfying option.
•             Hard-boiled eggs and fruit: A simple combination that travels well and requires almost no preparation.

The bottom line

Breakfast doesn't need to be fancy, time-consuming, or eaten at a specific hour to be beneficial. For many people, eating a balanced breakfast can support energy, focus, and satiety throughout the morning.

"If mornings are hectic, start small. Even something as simple as a yogurt, piece of fruit, or protein smoothie can help you begin the day fueled and ready to take on whatever comes next," said Alba.

"The best breakfast is the one that fits your lifestyle, includes nutrient-rich foods, and helps you feel your best. After all, healthy eating isn't about perfection. It's about creating habits that work in real life," she added.
