New Report, "Will AI Replace Writers?", Reveals The Value Behind The Sentences

Sep 29, 2026

New research report from Authority Acquisition examines whether AI will replace writers, offering nonfiction authors data on AI's effect on writing, publishing rules, and author income.

Torrance, United States, September 29, 2026 /NewsNetwork/ -- Authority Acquisition, a firm that helps experts, consultants, coaches, and speakers turn a body of knowledge into a nonfiction book and an author-led business, has released a research-backed report addressing one of the most debated questions among nonfiction authors today, whether AI will replace writers. The report draws on peer-reviewed research, federal labor projections, and published platform rules to separate measurable change from speculation.

The full report is available at https://authorityacquisition.co/p/022

The question carries weight for experts weighing whether writing a book still makes sense, since if AI can produce readable prose in seconds, some wonder whether the time and cost of authorship still pay off. The research points to a more specific answer than the debate usually allows.

AI is already changing routine writing tasks. Research by MIT economists Shakked Noy and Whitney Zhang, published in Science in 2023, found that 453 college-educated professionals completed short writing tasks 40% faster with generative AI, with quality rated 18% higher by independent evaluators. AI has improved considerably since that study appeared.

The freelance market registered the shift quickly. Xiang Hui, Oren Reshef, and Luofeng Zhou, publishing in Organization Science, tracked writing freelancers on Upwork after ChatGPT became widely available and found fewer new contracts and lower earnings. The writers with the strongest track records saw the larger declines. The report identifies the mechanism: generative tools narrowed the gap between a seasoned writer and a beginner, so a portfolio of clean prose stopped working as a competitive edge.

At the same time, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects little or no change in employment for writers and authors from 2025 to 2035, with about 11,900 openings projected each year on average over the decade, pointing to a shift in the kind of writing work available rather than its disappearance.

For nonfiction authors, that shift lands differently than the general labor market data suggests. In the Authors Guild's 2023 survey of 5,699 authors, those focusing on literary works, fiction and nonfiction, reported a median gross book income of $2,800 and median total author-related income of $10,100, which puts most of an author's earnings outside the book itself. The report argues that readers of an expert's book are not paying for well-turned sentences but for a solution someone has actually run, tested against real situations and refined after it failed the first time. Generic solutions are available free, in volume, from any chatbot. A tested one is not.

The report also explains why generative tools tend toward generic answers. A language model is trained on published text, so it produces something close to the statistical center of what has already been written on a subject. The judgment a practitioner builds from hundreds of specific cases, including which step people always skip and what happens in month three, appears in almost no published source. A model cannot retrieve what nobody wrote down.

Research by Anil Doshi and Oliver Hauser, published in Science Advances in 2024, points to the measurable consequence. AI-assisted short stories were rated more creative individually, yet were noticeably more similar to one another as a group. For an expert, a distinct point of view remains an asset that AI cannot easily replicate at scale.

Rules governing publishing already draw a similar line between authorship and assistance. The U.S. Copyright Office's report on copyright and artificial intelligence confirms that copyright protects human-authored expression, noting that prompts alone do not give a person enough control over AI output to claim it as their own. Amazon's Kindle Direct Publishing requires disclosure of AI-generated content, while content that is merely AI-assisted, such as editing or brainstorming, needs none.

The report also states where the firm draws its own line. Its writing program runs on roughly twenty-five purpose-built AI tools across nine steps, supporting authors in their audience research, method mapping, outlining, story planning, teaching content, and reader activities. However, manuscript drafting has none. That step is where existing material gets woven into a single cohesive manuscript, and the report holds that judgment about sequence, emphasis, pace, and voice stays with the author.

Authority Acquisition built its Author-to-Authority Roadmap to help nonfiction authors apply that distinction directly. The roadmap connects a mapped method to a book ecosystem and a broader product suite, while the company's Transformation Marketing™ approach keeps an author's own expertise, rather than generic AI content, as the throughline linking readers, customers, and clients. For nonfiction authors, the question was never really whether AI can write; it is what kind of expert they intend to be.
